Mia was walking on clouds after theyâd both declared their love for one another. She couldnât think of a moment in her life when she was happier and more content. When sheâd met Grant in the past, sheâd known that he was special. And now this man was in her life, making it better each day.
All the while theyâd worked in the tiny kitchen to make dinner, sheâd been humming a cheerful tune. Everything was coming up roses, puppies, and rainbows. She came down to earth with a huge thump, however, when she opened her phone to find several texts messages that sheâd missed while they were outside.
I see you.
I know what youâre doing.
Some things are inevitable.
The dirty dishes were forgotten as she read through the texts over and over again, her brain not quite comprehending the words.
âYouâre staring at your phone like you hate it. Is everything okay?â
It wasnât okay. Not even remotely.
But Mia wasnât going to hide and pretend. She and Grant had said that this relationship would be open and honest. No head games. No funny little loyalty tests. They were grownups and they were damn well going to act like it.
âI received some weird texts from an unknown number,â she replied, holding out her phone. âI donât know who these are from or why they would be sending them.â
Grant accepted the cell phone and quickly scanned the texts, his expression growing darker by the moment.
âSon of a bitch,â he muttered under his breath. âI donât like this at all.â
âIâm not that thrilled with it either. Maybe itâs just someone playing a weird prank.â
That would be the best-case scenario. Or a wrong number. Had she received any calls from the person who had this phone number before her? She couldnât remember any, but that didnât mean that these messages werenât meant for someone else. Someone that wasnât her.
âDoes the number look familiar to you?â Grant asked, still scowling at the screen. âItâs not a local area code.â
Grant handed her the phone before retrieving his own from the kitchen counter.
âIâll look it up. I donât think Iâve seen it before.â
It only took a second for it to come up as â843â which was the Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head area.
âI donât know anyone there,â she said. âDo you?â
âNo. Iâve been golfing there with a few buddies a couple of years ago, but thatâs it. Let me get my laptop and dial into work and see if I canât run the phone number. Get a name to go with this.â
âIt might be a wrong number.â
She could hear the hope in her own tone. She didnât want this to be something, ruining their weekend together.
âYou said you felt someone watching you. Now youâve received bizarre text messages basically saying that theyâre watching you. Thatâs a coincidence I donât like. Blame the cop in me. Iâm cynical as hell.â
It didnât take long to come to a conclusion.
Burner phone. Whoever had sent these texts had sent them from an untraceable phone probably bought at a big-box store with prepaid minutes.
